Tomomi Johnston

Tomomi started playing clarinet and saxophone at age 10 in Japan. As a school student, she spent an intense time competing and rehearsing in a concert band. She graduated from the Faculty of Education at Oita Universy in Japan and learnt teaching methods of music as well as her speciality in Japanese education. After coming to New Zealand, she has gained a music performance diploma from the Licentiate Trinity College London and has studied classical saxophone under Michael Jamieson at the University of Auckland. Her chamber music group TrioNique (2017) and Hari Trio (2018) was selected to perform in the final of the Auckland Chamber Music Society Prize. In 2019 October, she held a solo concert in Japan, visited local schools for workshops and lectures.
Tomomi is building her professional career through performing in the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Chamber Orchestra. She also coaches students and performs in concert for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Tomomi has worked at the CANZ Nelson Composers Workshop as a performer. TrioNique is planning several tours, performing and running educational workshops.
Tomomi is passionate about discovering and developing young New Zealand musicians. She is working as a mentor for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra educational programme and is a teacher at the Albany School of Music and Remuera Music Academy. Tomomi also plans and teaches various music workshops for students all around New Zealand, such as saxophone ensemble workshop at her work place in Auckland, woodwind workshop for Sistema Whangarei – Toi Akorangi, and several schools in the south island through TrioNique tour.
Currently, she is the president of New Zealand Saxophone Society.
