MARTIN QI • STRING | VIOLA | VIOLIN
 

Martin Qi is a dedicated violin and viola teacher with a focus on modern playing techniques and thoughtful teaching research. A graduate from the University of Auckland and Canterbury, Martin holds a Masters of Music with a specialization in violin and viola pedagogy, supervised by esteemed mentors Stephen Larsen, Professor David Lines, and Professor W. Dean Sutcliffe.

As a long-time member of the CMA teaching staff, Martin has built a reputation for connecting with students of all ages and skill levels. His teaching spans a broad range of styles, catering to beginners through to advanced players, and includes effective strategies for overcoming learning plateaus. His students have achieved notable success in performances, ABRSM graded exams, and orchestral/university auditions, reflecting their hard work and dedication.

Martin has been a finalist in both the NZCT National Chamber Music Competition and the ACMS Competition. His orchestral experience includes roles as principal violist in the CYO, UoA Symphony Orchestra, and assistant-principal viola in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. He has had the honour of performing under the baton of Plácido Domingo and receiving mentorship from international artists such as Elisabeth Kufferath, Andrew Beer, Leo Philips, Yuka Eguchi, and Caroline Almonte.
